“They can kill you”

From my fieldnotes (Kampala, 2015).

We talked more about seeking out informants for the study. █████ said “if you find someone short tempered they can kill you.”

Why? I asked.

“Because they might think you are against them.” They are in the newspapers and “if they find them they can be arrested.”

I asked if anyone has been arrested and the two of them debated about the case of a locally popular person — but they were unsure if they were actually arrested.

Because of their uncertainty, █████ instructed me to look at Red Pepper online to find the list of homosexuals.

But ███████ warned, “sometimes it gives false information.” But most come with evidence in the form of pictures.

███████ said “of course sometimes I think they lie to get money.” ██████ seemed to agree.
